Port St Lucie’s History.
Port Saint Lucie had its beginning in 1961 when General Development Corporation incorporated the City of Port Saint Lucie and began improvements on the area. The Atlantic Ocean to the east and the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, have long attracted vacationers and prospective residents as well. Port St. Lucie, the largest Treasure Coast city, encompasses seventy-seven square miles, of which only 41% is developed.
Port Saint Lucie’s future is brightened due to the projects like Saint Lucie West, the largest development on the Treasure Coast. It is comprised of 12 residential villages as well as commercial, and industrial areas in the 7-square-mile, billion dollar project. St Lucie West is a uniquely self-contained community set on 4,600 beautiful acres of lakes, golf courses, a major baseball stadium and beautiful homes. County Club Estates, Kings Isle, Lake Charles, The Reserve and Lake Forest are just a few of the protected small town neighborhoods found here. Florida Atlantic University has its Treasure Coast campus in Port Saint Lucie.
Port Saint Lucie’s size is approximately 112 square miles, 3rd largest in area of the State, with an additional 20 square miles within its Urban Service Boundary. The City has a wide range of housing options. Several large subdivisions were developed in 2005, including River Place, St. James Club, The Cascades, Lake Forest, Portofino Isles, and Tesoro.
Port St. Lucie offers a quality of life that few can match. We are located on the Southeast Coast of Florida with 14 miles of the St. Lucie River flowing through the central area of the city. On our eastern side we have the 6,000 acre Savannas preserve, the Indian River Lagoon estuary, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Port St. Lucie offers acres of natural habitat, the winter home of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) with a new golf school, and Club Med at Sandpiper Bay, one of two family-oriented Club Med’s in the country.
What began as a predominantly residential “bedroom community” is now undergoing a transition, becoming a dynamic and diverse city. With its low density and affordable land, Port St. Lucie is appealing to business owners looking to move to a centrally located area.
